As I have noted previously, my bar has a 1:30 a.m. liquor license in Missouri, which embeds a midnight closing time of Sundays.
This last Sunday was game 5 in the World Series with the Kansas City Royals verses the New York Mets. The series standings were Kansas City, 3 game wins, and the New York Mets, 1 game win. The Kansas City Royals only needed one more game win to win the World Series title for 2015. As many of us watched, the New York Mets were up 2-0 up until the 8th inning. By the eighth inning, the Kansas City Royals tied up the score at 2-2. By the end of the 12th inning, the Kansas City Royals had won the World Series title for 2015 as the clock struck 11:36p.m.
*Freak out mode* We have to be closed in 24 minutes! And the entire bar just rushed the streets in celebration!
My faith in humanity was restored in humanity when EVERY SINGLE person with an open tab, (without their credit cards on file), came back into the bar, before midnight, to respectfully pay their tabs. I think this is something that you would only truly find in the Midwest. Not to mention, there was no vandalism or destruction of property in Kansas City, while celebrating our victory. Wow.
Too often we hear of negative stories surrounding dishonest people - which is what the news media seems to focus on. It's always nice to hear of good people who are honest and capable of doing the right thing regardless of what's going on around them.
ReplyDeleteThe news if full of whatever will get them the most publicity, which sadly has resorted in the bad people do verses the good.
DeleteI'm not surprised at all. I think, overall, Kansas City is filled with amazing people. I remember when the Giants won the World Series last year and there were videos and pictures of their vandalism and I immediately thought "we wouldn't have done that here if we won" and now KC has proven my theory true. So glad I was able to be a part of this amazing experience.
ReplyDeleteI really think it's something about sports here. Sadly you would be surprised how many dishonest people or even REGULARS that try walking out on their tabs. I was very happily surprised!

ReplyDeleteI think that is truly impressive. I feel like even if it was not intentional, it would be really easy to forget your tab at a time like that! I have to say that I have heard over and over throughout the World Series Celebration how amazing Kansas City citizens have been. There have been many accounts of Royals fans welcoming our competitors at home games and acting well mannered and respectful. It makes you proud to be a part of our city.
ReplyDeleteLast year we made multiple news stories regarding how welcoming and humble we are. I think it has to do something with sports in this city, and something that brought us together. I'm still so surprised that everyone came back in and paid their tab. I know how hard that could of been to remember. In those situation, even I pay cash as I go.
DeleteBoom! There are nice people in the world! The atmosphere around town has been just great since they have won. I have worn my Royals shirt out and just given complete strangers high-fives. Good Time:)
ReplyDeleteThey still exist! Some times I think they are few and far in between until something huge happens!
